“Um. . .sure Dad, whatever.” Heather responded without taking off her headphones.

“Did you practice today? Are you hydrated? You know, if you start trying to hydrate yourself on the same day, it is already too late. You really need to start now….” He continued.

Heather just stared into her laptop, held up a large clear cup containing ice water and shook it. “I got it.”

“Oh. Is your uniform clean? Do you…”

“MOM!!! Come get Dad!” Heather yelled. “Dad, I’ll be fine.”

“Come on Bill, leave her alone. Heather, not too much longer on the computer, bed time, OK?” Mary said and closed the bed room door, pushing her husband ahead of her.

“I love you baby! You’re going to do. . . “ Bill yelled, but the door had already closed.

“How can you be so calm?” Bill asked Mary following her down the stairs. “If she does good in the game tomorrow. . . I mean there are college scouts that are coming just to see her play. This could mean a scholarship.”

“Yes Bill, I know.” Mary smiled at her husband and patted his arm. “She’ll be fine. She is really good, she just needs to do what she has always done. Now stop worrying so much.”

“How can you be so calm about it? Tomorrow is for the championship, the arena is sold out, we are playing our biggest rival and. . . .”

“We?” Mary laughed. “I thought Heather was playing.”

“You know what I mean. This is huge Mary. Her getting a scholarship to the University is a really big deal. I just want to make sure that she is ready. I’m gonna go say good night, I think I forgot to say it.”

“No, you are not going back to say anything to her. She deals with this pressure just fine, in fact much better than you! Just leave her be.”

Bill just stood there looking at Mary in disbelief, then shook his head and grinned. “Not sure what you mean, but I’ll leave her alone. And as far as me dealing with this, I’m fine.”

“Mmm-hmm” was Mary’s response.

“I’m going for a walk,” Bill said. “You know, just to get a little exercise.”

“Whatever you need dear.”

About joatmon14

Man in recovery from everything, looking for a little help, inspiration and direction.... Have spent the last 25 years working in big business, getting lost in all the chaos, not feeling like what I did mattered. By no means am I a professional writer nor do I even think I am that good, but it is something I love to do. Getting lost in a world of words, even for just a little while is why I started my blogs. In reality, at the age of 49 I am trying to find my voice. To find my passion. Maybe starting a little late, but better late than never. I write for me, I enjoy reading other's thoughts very much as well and look forward to the day that I can hold an extended, intelligent, meaningful conversation with YOU View all posts by joatmon14
